Senior Poverty Rates: Meeting the Challenge of Bad News

On September 13, the U.S. Census Bureau released its annual reports on income and poverty in the U.S. While the overall poverty rate was approximately the same as 2020, people aged 65 and older were the one age group to see a statistically significant rise in poverty at 10.3% in 2021, up from 8.9% in 2020. Senior Solutions has been in the forefront of tackling senior poverty in southeastern Vermont for nearly 50 years, and our efforts are paying off.

Neighborhood Connections offers rides through their community-supported transportation program which serves residents in the towns of Andover, Bondville, Chester, Jamaica, Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, South Londonderry, Windham, Winhall, and Weston.

“Deerfield Valley 100%” Campaign launches in October!

Senior Solutions is launching its largest “100%” campaign ever, reaching seven towns in the Deerfield Valley region, with the goal of ensuring that every household is food and fuel secure.  By the first week in October, every household in Dover, Halifax, Marlboro, Readsboro, Searsburg, Wardsboro, Whitingham, and Wilmington will receive a letter briefly describing on-going programs providing help with food and fuel resources available.

Vet to Vet Program Coordinator in Wilmington on Sept. 8

Have you served in the U.S. Armed Services? Do you remember the “Buddy System” in boot camp?  Do you know a veteran?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, the Vet to Vet Program could be for you.  Coordinator Susan Triplett, a U.S. Air Force veteran, will be staffing the Senior Solutions outreach office at 18 Beaver Street, Wilmington (the Old Firehouse) on Thursday, September 8 from 11 am to 1 pm.

Many people think they have an intuitive understanding of self-neglect, but often fail to consider all the impact a self-neglecting individual may have on their family and community. On a related note, many do not understand how some basic services can help save the life of a self-neglecting individual in some instances and, how complicated a self-neglect case may become, posing challenges in protecting the health and safety of not just the self-neglecting individual, but also their family and neighbors.
