The Senior Solutions vision is to ensure that every person will age in the place of their choice, with the support they need and the opportunity for meaningful relationships and active engagement in their community. Our case managers personify that vision. Claudia, Abby and Susan in Brattleboro; Rhonda, Pam, Malcolm and Sue W. in Springfield; and Clarissa and Lynn in Windsor all embody this vision as they work tirelessly to coordinate home-based, long-term care services for their clients.
Another staff member who embodies this vision is Case Manager Supervisor, Gary Hilliard. Gary has trained and guided case managers at Senior Solutions for over 20 years. Prior to that, he earned his stripes as a client advocate serving older Vermonters throughout Windham County. Gary has long been a champion of the right for older Vermonters to age in the place of their choice. He often waxes nostalgic about the self-neglecting clients he supported over the years, and recently sent me a 1995 newspaper clipping describing a program he helped launch in which students at the Wilmington Middle School were matched with local seniors for visits and household tasks.
Gary is known throughout Senior Solutions, the communities we serve and across the state as a highly knowledgeable and amiable supervisor. As he did for his clients, Gary has consistently championed the case management team here. Among his colleagues around the state and the State agencies we work with, Gary always strongly represented the interests of the case management program in any discussion of State policies and procedures.
Now Gary is retiring. He is looking forward to spending more time camping in his travel trailer with his wife and grandkids. Perhaps he’ll dust off his golf clubs or the new tractor that has been sitting unused in his garage. We will miss his wealth of knowledge, his smiling countenance, and his endless repertoire of stories. We wish him many years ahead of leisure and we thank him for the great number of years he has served the best interest of older Vermonters while at Senior Solutions.
