SPRINGFIELD, VT. – Senior Solutions needs volunteers from several Upper Valley towns to join its Advisory Council.
Senior Solutions is a non-profit group serving 47 communities in Windsor and Windham counties, providing seniors with critical information and assistance like Meals on Wheels, health insurance and mental health counseling, transportation, exercise programs, home based social services and caregiver support. The Advisory Council provides advocacy and suggestions on furthering the non-profits’ goals.
Advisory Council volunteers meet once a month; the gatherings are a combination of business, educational and social matters. Volunteers should have interest or experience in caregiver and elder issues. The meetings often feature educational speakers, updates on legislative issues and agency services. Members are encouraged to share information so staff can learn more about elder issues and challenges and effectively respond.
“It’s a great way to be in touch with all of the issues related to seniors in our area and it’s a great networking opportunity that can result in improving services for the elderly – if you want to make a difference for seniors – this is it,” noted Richard Davis of Guilford, a retired nurse.
“We’re hoping to welcome more volunteers from the Upper Valley, specifically Hartford, Norwich, Pomfret, Barnard, Plymouth, Weathersfield and Woodstock,” said Senior Solutions Executive Director Carol Stamatakis. “Anyone with an interest in issues relating to seniors should reach out to me.”
Jim Dean of Windsor volunteers on the Advisory Council because he realizes many elderly people need help in navigating medical, legal and financial issues.
“It’s very challenging to them facing questions about health care or end of life issues and we need community resources and people with some knowledge and experience to help them,” noted Dean. “Senior Solutions is the only option for many of these people and I’m glad to be a part of the organization.”
